Improving survival of lung cancer victims

Targeted chemotherapy and immunotherapy have improved survival of end-stage lung-cancer patients, said a city-based oncologist here on Wednesday.

Speaking about rise in detection of lung cancers in the city, M. Vamshi Krishna, medical oncologist at Apollo Hospital, said exposure to carcinogens, mainly tobacco, remains the underlying major risk-factor for lung cancer. “In the past few years, there has been an increase in the number of lung cancer cases — a 7-8% increase in males and 3-4% increase in females,” Dr. Krishna said while calling also blaming contribution of air-pollution. He warned about symptoms including, cough that refused to subside, blood-tinged sputum, chest pain that worsened with deep breathing, loss of appetite and weight as well fatigue or weakness.
